Biography of Stephen Crowe
Stephen is a teacher at Longcause Special School in Plymouth and is accompanying Daniel Brimacombe (one of his pupils) on this leg of the voyage. When Stephen’s family heard that he would be sailing on Sir Francis Chichester’s iconic yacht they were at first mystified but intrigued and are now very impressed. In the past Stephen has only sailed dinghies during PGL holidays. He hopes that sailing onboard Gipsy Moth will give him time and the opportunity to evaluate what he is doing and where he is going. He also sees it as a fantastic opportunity to be a part of something global which will have an impact that will last a lifetime on the young people involved.
He describes the top five moments in his life so far as:
- Having my children
- First hanging baby clothes on the line
- A poem my daughter gave me
- Working in Nigeria at a school for 15 months
- First descent of the Ardeche River
The achievement he is most proud of in his life is bringing up his children.
Biography of Daniel Brimacombe
Daniel is fifteen years old and a pupil at Longcause Special School in Plymouth. He has one brother and three sisters, his parents are divorced and Daniel lives with his mother Carol.
He describes the top four moments of his life so far as:
- Being awarded a shield for working on an environment project
- Spending a whole day at a theme park with his dad
- Taking part in the selection to go on Gipsy Moth
- Passing his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award
The achievement he is most proud of in his life is being selected to sail onboard Gipsy Moth. He likes being involved with his family and has recently helped his uncle to re-build a car which he particularly enjoyed. Sometimes Daniel needs to have things explained to him more than once and it upsets him when people do not take the time to understand him and any problems he has. Daniel feels that his key strengths are that he is able to work well with people of all ages, when he starts something he likes to finish it, and that he follows instructions well, all of these strengths will be very useful during his time onboard Gipsy Moth IV. Daniel’s mum is very proud of him for having been selected to sail onboard Gipsy Moth and his grandma thinks that this is a fantastic opportunity for him.
Where Daniel lives there is not a lot to do outside of school so he generally spends his weekends playing board games, playing on the computer and watching tv, he also likes going to the local ice rink.
When asked to describe himself, Daniel said, “I have a good sense of humor, I enjoy being with friends, I am hardworking and polite, helpful and tolerant of others”.
Biography of Jason Firth
Jason Firth is 17 years old and from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, where he lives with his mother and father and younger brother and sister. Jason is a student at the Isle of Wight College and is studying motor mechanics. The top moments of Jason’s life so far have been being selected to participate in the Gipsy Moth IV Voyage and getting into his local darts team. He enjoys listening to music and going socializing with his friends. When asked about his key strengths Jason said that he is a happy person and finds it easy to get on with others. Jason’s family are all very pleased that he is going to be sailing from Panama to Balboa onboard Gipsy Moth IV and extremely proud, although they would love to be in his place. The furthest Jason has been away from home in the past is Menorca, so he is looking forward to stepping off the plane in Panama City, and is extremely grateful to the Hampton Trust for selecting him for this once in a lifetime opportunity and to everyone who has made this voyage possible.
Biography of Dannie Ford
Dannie Ford is 17 years old and from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, where he lives with his parents. Dannie is one of eleven children and has six brothers and four sisters. When asked about the top moments in his life so far Dannie said that they were being selected to participate in the Gipsy Moth IV voyage and being accepted by the Isle of Wight College. Dannie enjoys being around happy people, but hates leaving people behind, however he is very excited about being selected to participate in the Gipsy Moth IV voyage and hopes that it will be a turning point in his life. His parents are really pleased that he is going and are very proud of him for having been selected. Dannie’s biggest fear is heights so he is not planning on climbing the mast! The furthest place he has ever been outside of the UK is France when he went on holiday with his father and little brother, so he is slightly anxious about the flight to Panama City which will take approximately 19 hours! |
