Corum Microsite -- Global Partners and Sponsors of Leg 8

Corum History

Since the company's beginning, CORUM has taken pride in being a distinctively "different" Swiss watch manufacturer. Founded in 1955, its roots began and remain in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.

Gaston Ries, a talented watchmaker, with the help of his nephew René Bannwart, transformed his small private label watch factory into a unique brand all of their own. The partnership was perfect - the uncle brought an eye for detail and the nephew an eye for beauty. They chose the name CORUM based on the word "Quorum" (explained below) and decided that the logo would be an upright key, "La Clef du Temps Parfait" or The key to perfect time. This motto later became the "The key to beautiful time"

CORUM

The home of CORUM

In 1956, the first watches to appear in the market were daring, excitingly different works and were greeted with great success. It was the first indication of CORUM's propensity to be a trend setting watch manufacturer.

Two years later, in the rush of prepairing a new collection for the Basel Watch and Jewelry Fair, the hour markers were missing from some of the watch dials. Leaving them plain with only the logo, CORUM again set a trend and the company's renown grew. By 1964 CORUM firmly established its worldwide fame with the introduction of the $20 Double Eagle Coin - a model worn by numerous U.S. Presidents and prominent civilians alike.

But we should not forget the outstanding designs of the 21st century such as the provocative Bubble models, And above all, those unique pieces recreating he refined and exquisite craftsmanship of yesteryear, with dials hand-painted in the custom of antique miniatures or enameled in the "grand feu" style, or even engraved by hand in mother-of-pearl according to a patented process. Even bolder still, the impeccable Vanitas and its marquetry dial composed of marble and precious stones.

Corum thus offers a wide range of unique models, not only exciting the passion of the most demanding collectors but also offering incomparable, original pieces to lovers of grand complications.

The Story behind the Logo

Corum a name from Quorum, a word of Latin origin meaning a fixed minimum number of members whose presence is necessary to make the proceedings and decisions of an assembly or society valid. It is then said that the quorum has been reached. The symbol, an upright key decorating the dial, is reminiscent of the brand's first motto, "the key to perfect time". It evokes the precious tool that gives life to the old timekeepers. It is the symbol of the mystery and the riddle to solve.
