GMIV Project

GMIV passing the Sydney Opera House
Copywright - Mark Lamble

- Project Vision -

This section of the navigation menu provides you with an overview of how the Gipsy Moth IV project started, some background to Sir Francis Chichester's original record breaking voyage, and what the Gipsy Moth IV project aims to achieve by undertaking a second circumnavigation.

- The Voyage -

Through this page you can access all of the information about Gipsy Moth IV current voyage by using the Leg Selector. This includes:

  • Voyage Plan - access the interactive voyage chart with details of the route that Gipsy Moth IV is taking, as well as, detailed information on the countries where she will be stoping.
  • Crew Biographies - find out more about the young adults that are joining Gipsy Moth IV on each of voyage legs.
  • Gipsy Moth TV - view the daily video log from the legs of the voyage. The videos are uplloaded to the web site daily from the yacht providing you with a unique insight into the experiences of the young adults.
  • Voyage Log - every day during the voayge the crew write a daily voyage log and post this to the web site along with an image that represents their day. This is one of the most visited parts of the web site as it gives the opportunity for the young adults to express their feelings about their expriences.
  • Weather - the official meteorologist for the project Dr. Andrew Eccleston from the Earth Sciences Dept. at the Univsity of Plymouth posts a regular weather update to the web site enabling you to get a feel for the conditions that the young adults are facing.
  • Oceanography - on most of the legs during the voyage one of the tasks that the young adults are responsible for is taking water samples three times a day. The data they collect is transferred to the Univerity of Plymouth where it is analysed before being posted to the site.
  • Contact the Crew - through this section you can send e-mails direct to the crew onboard Gipsy Moth IV. Your e-mail and the response from the crew will be posted to this section of the leg selector for the relevant leg. On average the crew receive about 15-20 e-mails a day which is great as it makes them aware of how many people are actively following the voyage. Many of the e-mails are from schools who are usingthe voayage as a platform for teaching subjects such as geography and history.
  • Gallery - from this part of the leg selector you will be taken to the image gallery for the project where you can find all of the pictures that have been taken by the crew during their time onboard Gipsy Moth IV.
  • Forum - this section will take you to the Gipsy Moth IV Forum. This is an online community where you can directly contribute your thoughts about any aspect of the project

- GMIV Cockpit -

This page provides you with detailed instrument data direct from Gipsy Moth IV. The data is gathered from the Brooks and Gatehouse (B&G) instruments onboard via the B&G Deckman software. The data includes the folliwng:

  • Actual Boat Speed - this is the speed that Gipsy Moth IV is travelling through the water in knots .
  • Actual True Wind Speed - this is the speed of the winds measured in knots that GMIV is experiencing. This does not take into account the movement of the yacht relative to the wind direction and speed.
  • Apparent Wind Speed - this is the speed of the winds measured in knots that GMIV is experiencing taking into account the movement of the yacht relative to the wind speed and direction.
  • Actual True Wind Angle - this is the angle of the wind relative to the yacht. The dial shows wheter the true wind direction is coming from the port or starboard side of the yacht in angles relative to the bow.
  • Actual True Wind Angle - this dial shows the angle of the true wind in terms of compass direction.
  • HYDRA 2000 - the display on the Hyrda 2000 shows the average Speed Over the Ground and Course Over the Ground for the last hour.
  • Simrad CX33 Charplotter - this shows the latest position of Gipsy Moth IV in terms of Latitude and Longitude. You can also view the position on a chart by using the Virtual Chart.
