Find out how the Gipsy Moth IV project is supporting schools and more importantly how your school can benefit by getting involved with the project...
On-Line Teaching Resources
In conjunction with the Pompey Study Centre in Portsmouth and BT Education, the Gipsy Moth IV project has developed a range of teaching resources in the form of structured lesson plans aimed at KS2 and cross referenced to the National Curriculum, however, there will be a large amount of information and data that can be used at KS3 and KS4. These resources are available free to any school, all you have to do is register. When you Register for Resources you will be given a password that will give you access to all the different materials. You can down load free resources designed for classroom use in a PDF format that can then be printed or photocopied. New resources are added each month.
If there is a particular topic that you would like to see included in the resources or if you have a lesson plan that you would like to contribute please email our education team gmschools@uksa.org
We have received feedback from a number of schools throughout the UK and internationally about how they have integrated the Gipsy Moth IV project into their teaching delivery.
For example, Hawley Primary School has fully integrated Gipsy Moth IV into their Geography Lessons, entitling the Geography Unit as ‘Connecting ourselves to the world’. One of the activities fulfilling the lesson objectives is students watching Gipsy Moth TV clips on the website to stimulate discussions about the Geography of the area as well as thinking of questions they would like to ask the crew and using the ‘e-mail the boat’ facility. Live Conference Calls and GMIV Visits to Schools
Using the onboard satelite communication equipment, the Gipsy Moth IV crew also hold live telephone conference calls with schools. The video opposite is from Leg 1 with Medina High School. This is a great way of engaging students directly with the project. All you need is a telephone with a speaker phone and the caost of the call is the smae as calling anywhere in the UK. If you would like to find out how to participate in one of these calls please contact gmschools@uksa.org.
Alternatively, a member of the UK based GMIV Team would be happy to come to your school and give talks or presentations on the project. Or if your schools is located close to one of the stopover locations during the voyage, the crew would very happy to come and talk at your school. In Tenerife for example, the GMIV crew visited the English Educational Centre followed by a visit to the yacht. If you would like to know more about this please contact gmschools@uksa.org
In addition to the lesson plans and worksheets available in the Teachers Resources section of the site there are many other features that students may find fun and interesting.
