Isle of Wight Microsite > Isle of the Wight Selection Process

selection courses has been held with twelve young Isle of Wight people hoping to be one of the lucky ones chosen to fly out and join Gipsy Moth IV as crew at one of her global destinations. This opportunity has been made available by the Isle of Wight Economic Partnership through their Inspire project which aims to raise the aspirations of young Isle of Wight people.
During the two day selection process, run by UKSA, the young hopefuls were met with a series of challenges aimed to draw on their strengths and bring out their personalities to enable the selection panel to make their decision. This time the activities included sailing, water polo and a raft building competition which resulted in some very wet teams!

The selection panel met at the end of the course to make their decision and the two lucky people chosen from this course were Alice Burton, 17 from Carisbrooke High School and Rebecca Holdstock, 18, from the Isle of Wight College.

Alice has now been offered the opportunity to fly out and to Mooloolaba, Australia where she will join Gipsy Moth in her journey up to Cairns. Meanwhile Rebecca has been offered the chance to fly out to Tonga to join Gipsy Moth with the destination of Auckland, New Zealand. Both Alice and Rebecca will now go through a more intensive training session to prepare them for Ocean sailing before they fly out to join Gipsy Moth. Also chosen as reserves were Daniel McVeigh, Charlotte Davis, and Edmund Keith.

The panel were very impressed with one other candidate, Sam Attrill from Sandown High School. As a result of attending this course, Sam has  been encouraged to apply to the UKSA Chichester Bursary Scheme which enables young people to attend a UKSA professional yacht training course.
