LiveVoyageInformation

Welcome to the heart of the Gipsy Moth Project. Inside this section of the site you will find all the online communication tools linking with the boat on her historic second circumnavigation, as well as links to the research GMIV is caring out and weather information.

Voyage Route and Dates
Interactive Voyage RouteUse the GMIV Interactive Voyage Chart to view the route that she will be taking on her second circumnavigation. Hover over a destination (yellow circles) circle to view the name of the country and the arrival date of the Gipsy Moth IV. Click on a destination circle to view key information about many of the stopover locations. You can use the sliding globe near the bottom of the I.V.R to scroll the main, upper globe.Find out the dates when GMIV will be arriving and departing to/from the 32 stopover locations throughout the 22 month voyage.

Gipsy Moth TV

Via the media centre onboard GMIV you are able to 'live' with the crew on their unique voyage like never before.  Video footage direct from the boat is posted to the GMTV page daily, including interviews with the crew, live sailing action, and footage from the stopover locations.

Daily Voyage Log
Every day during the voyage the skipper will post a Voyage Log detailing the days activities and an overview of the yachts performance in the last 24 hours.  This is a great way of keeping up to date with the voyage and getting the inside track on the crew.

Weather Reports

Ocens Grib File DataWhen GMIV is on passage you can check out the weather that they are experiencing through the Daily Weather Report . This information is posted by Dr. Andrew Ecclestone, the projects official meteorologist from the University of Plymouth.  The data is made available to the project by Oceans, GMN and Theyr.net .

Virtual Cockpit - TEMPORARILY DISABLED
This page displays the telemetry from the B&G instruments onboard Gipsy Moth IV enabling you to see details of true and apparent wind speed and wind direction and the boat speed that the boat is experiencing.  This data is updated hourly via the Nera Sat C system on the yacht.  The page also shows the averages for each data point over the previous hour and the yachts Course Over Ground and Speed Over Ground.

You can also view the Astro Navigation work done onboard GMIV; although the yacht carries modern navigation equipment, in the true spirit of Sir Francis' original voyage the crew also undertake astro navigation using the sun, stars, moon and planets to determine their position.

Oceanographer
OceanographyA key part of the voyage is the oceanographic research that the crew carry 3 times a day when GMIV is on passage.  Using state of the art equipment provided by RS Aqua and YSI Hydro data the crew take samples of water temperature, turbidity, chlorophyll and other environmental data. The data is transmitted back to the University of Plymouth daily and interpreted by Dr. Alex Nimmo Smith at the School of Earth, Ocean & Environmental Sciences before being posted to the site.

Online Forum
Your chance to interact with the project, ask questions, share experiences, and generally immerse yourself in our very own online community through the online forum.

Contact GMIV Crew
If you would like to ask the crew on GMIV a question during the voyage you can send an e-mail to the yacht via the Contact GMIV Crew page.

SMS Updates
Sign up to Free Live SMS Updates via your phone as they happen.  There will also be competitions run throughout the voyage via SMS to win merchandise and other fun stuff - the proceeds from all the competitions go directly to supporting the project.
