Harrowing conditions but still on track - 27/05/2007
We crew are 11 miles SSE of the entrance to Fowey, battling head on against a relentless Northerly. After 1,000 miles at sea we are ending Leg 31 as we started it! In more ways than one, because spirits are high as we approach journey's end. Part of that is the prospect of hot showers, of course, but the crew are now nursing, under a thoroughly soggy exterior, a very positive sense of achievement.

- 27/05/2007
The Gipsy Moth crew have been joined by a random lost soul, blown off course by the harsh weather they are battling against as they make their way towards plymouth. This unfortunate, tired and miserable bird (unidentified by us) was clearly blown off from the nearby land (The Lizard) in the overnight gales, and has taken refuge in our cockpit. Glen, who was quite taken with his new crew mate, posed for a photo opportunity with the little fellow, after rescuing him from on deck.

Plymouth Rolls out for Gipsy Moth IV - 26/05/2007
Plymouth are really pushing the boat out for the homecoming of Gipsy Moth IV. The Plymouth Events diary for May has Gipsy Moth on the cover and the posters advertising it are all over town. I came across this one as I was walking last night on the corner of HOW Street !! Looking at the poster and the street name - I am not exactly sure HOW we have got this boat around the world again with it's young crew but we have and the triumphant return to Plymouth is creating quite a stir here. At the Yardarm Pub they are even selling beer at 1967 prices ( at least until the barrel runs out ) and people are dressing in 60's costumes on the Hoe to help re-create the atmosphere. Good news is that the boat is on schedule there would be a few disappointed people on the Hoe otherwise !!

Damp passage... - 26/05/2007
we are now 163 miles SW of Drake's Island. Winds were a little weaker than hoped overnight and we have had to increase rpm to compensate. Nevertheless, by juggling with the sail plan and working what wind there is we have managed to stay more or less on schedule without eating too far into the fuel reserves. We are still confidently expecting to gain advantage from the approaching depression, though the price we pay may be a roller-coaster ride when winds increase again tomorrow. No doubt we will be forgiven for arriving looking a little damp, so long as we arrive.

Wind Drops off Lizard Point - 26/05/2007
Wonderful to be able to relate position to a UK landmark after the best part of 2 years circling the world. And not just any landmark. Winds have all but deserted us for the time being and we have handed all sails except the main. Thanks to earlier gains we have enough fuel in hand for this not to be more than a minor irritant (tremendous engine, but we're fed up with listening to it). Arrival on time in Plymouth is not seriously

FINAL DAY IN PORTO CERVO - 24/04/2007
To day has been very hot but very productive. After a bit of a lay in & a leisurely breakfast we all spent the morning catching up on some final cleaning & polishing. Amy washed the main mast which was covered in African dust, Rambo polished some of the metal work on deck, Sam & Josh cleaned the weed on the water line from the dinghy, while I cleaned the barnacles from below the water line & Leanna directed. After this spurt of activity the crew went exploring Porto Cervo. Leanna & I caught up on some routine maintenance.

Swimming in the Tyrrhenian sea - 22/04/2007
Well it looks like we are getting it all on this trip. With the strong winds of Friday, the light winds on Saturday & today we have had thick fog, a real pea supper! We started the day motoring through the Egadi Islands & out into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Around 0530 a light NE breeze filled in so we set running sail, main & mizzen & enjoyed an hour of peace as we watched the most beautiful sun rise unfold. After carrying out some basic engine checks & finishing our toast we sailed in to a fog bank & the wind died away. With the engine & radar on we picked our way through the fog for 2 hours until the sun took charge of the day & burnt the fog away.

All good things come to an end - 16/04/2007
Tomorrow we will arrive in Malta. I may not have a lot of time to write about it after the event, because that will be my last full day aboard after bringing the yacht all the way here from Sri Lanka through 3 fascinating months. Five legs, three continents, five different crews and all of it a magnificent experience. Including last year’s journey from Darwin through Kupang to Bali, and an even earlier trip out of Gibraltar to mark the 200th anniversary of Trafalgar, that must be over 5,000 miles, with never a dull moment. And that’s not counting the 200 white-knuckle miles behind a French tug from Rangiroa to Tahiti.
