  Leg 4 - Transatlantic - 20/12/2005
During Leg 4, the crew of the Gipsy Moth IV traversed the Atlantic passing into the Tropics. As before, the figure above compares the sea surface temperature (SST) as measured by the crew against the mean SST from the MODIS satellite. Again, there is generally good agreement between the satellite and boat data (shown by the matching colours), although towards the end of the leg, the on-board measurements appear to be slightly less than the satellite data - a bias that will be investigated. ...Full Story

  Leg 3 Sea Surface Temperature - 01/12/2005
Leg 3 saw the Gipsy Moth IV pass down the north-west coast of Africa. The image above shows the sea surface temperature measurements for this leg (circles), overlaid on the average satellite data. The waters through which they passed on the way to Tenerife clearly get warmer further south. ...Full Story

  Leg 001: Sea Surface Temperature - 14/10/2005
The World's oceans are very important for storing and transporting heat, and hence controlling climate and weather around the Globe. During the GM IV voyage, the participants will be recording sea surface temperature (SST) up to three times per day, sending these readings back to the University of Plymouth via email. ...Full Story

You can find more details about the equipment used to make the measurements under the "Educational/Oceanographic Studies" section of this website. ...Full Story
