Thank you to Yachting Monthly, without whom this project would never even have started. Prior to UKSA's involvement in the project, editor Paul Gelder - Founder of the Gipsy Moth IV Project, ran a 12 month campaign with the Maritime Trust to save the yacht from rotting away in dry dock at Greenwich and restore her for a second voyage around the world. Yachting Monthly has covered the story of Gipsy Moth's rebirth extensively and will continue to do so for the duration of the voyage drawing on reports from Yachting Monthly journalists taking part in each leg of the voyage. The Gipsy Moth IV Team would like to thank everyone at Yachting Monthly for all their hard work and enthusiasm for the project - Paul Gelder, Dick Durham, Miles Kendal, Graham Snook and that is to name just a few of the many people involved. Baranardos
During 2005, Barnardo’s the UK’s leading children’s charity has been marking the centenary of the death of the charities founder, Dr Thomas Barnardo by celebrating the difference the charity continues to make to the lives of hundreds of thousands of children in the UK.
In pursuit of its vision Barnardo’s provides services in locations across the UK, directly reaching approximately 120,000 children and young people and their families, as well as having an impact on a significant additional number through a wide range of partnerships.
Dr Barnardo’s belief that the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children deserve a better start in life and the chance of a better future remains the philosophy of Barnardo’s in 2005.
Whilst we no longer run orphanages of Victorian times – we do continue to protect, nurture and provide opportunities for children through 361 specialised projects in local communities across the UK. The charity is committed to helping children in greatest need. Children need to be protected from harm, to enjoy good emotional, mental and physical health, and to feel they belong in their home and community. We believe that the lives of all children should be free from poverty, abuse and discrimination, and we work with the most vulnerable children and young people, giving them the chance of a different and better life ahead.
Barnardo’s services include parenting support and education; fostering and adoption; family centres; counselling and therapy for people who have been abused; protection for young people who have been sexually exploited; support for children excluded from school; work with young carers; programmes for young offenders, and accommodation for care leavers.
