Take a virtual tour around famous yacht

Advanced film technology means you can see Gipsy Moth IV virtually first hand as she undergoes her much needed restoration

United Kingdom Sailing Academy (UKSA), new owners of Gipsy Moth IV, have teamed up with innovative multi-media company UPIX, to create a virtual tour of the yacht as she undergoes a complete restoration and refit.  Visitors can take the tour from the dedicated Gipsy Moth IV website at www.gipsymoth.org.  The pioneering new film technology means that it feels like you are inside the yacht with 20/20 vision and can walk around different areas, taking a close up inspection wherever you want.  The tour will be updated every three weeks and will give a fascinating insight into this major restoration, being undertaken by the yacht’s original boatbuilders, Gosport based Camper & Nicholsons.

Gipsy Moth IV is the 54ft sailing ketch that the then 64 year-old Francis Chichester sailed around the world between August 1966 and May 1967.  The voyage was the first solo, one-stop circumnavigation of the world.  Knighted on his return, his extraordinary achievement placed Sir Francis amongst the illustrious elite of sailing’s hall of fame.

On display in Greenwich for over 30 years, exposure to the elements, including London’s acid rain, took a heavy toll on this famous yacht and she was literally rotting away until Yachting Monthly magazine started their ‘save Gipsy Moth campaign’.  Now under the care of new custodians UKSA, she is being restored to her former glory, a project that will cost over £300,000.  The UKSA has established a restoration fund into which companies and individuals can donate, with a target of £1 million that the Academy believes is necessary to secure the yacht’s future for generations to come.
