Corum’s help for famous yacht ‘timed’ to perfection - April '05
World renowned, Swiss watchmaker becomes latest high profile partner for the Gipsy Moth IV project
The Gipsy Moth Project announces that Corum Swiss Timepieces will be the Official Timekeeper. Corum, who celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, is one of the world’s most respected and innovative Swiss watchmakers. Its long standing association with sailing has inspired the company to become ‘Global Partner’ for the important project that will see the famous yacht firstly restored to her former glory and then sailed around the world once more.
Gipsy Moth IV is the 54ft sailing ketch that Francis Chichester, at 64, sailed around the world between August 1966 and May 1967. Knighted on his return, Chichester’s voyage made maritime history breaking several records including the first solo, one-stop circumnavigation of the world.
The yacht is now under the care of new owners, the United Kingdom Sailing Academy (UKSA), who are overseeing the much needed restoration work. Upon completion, a fully crewed Gipsy Moth IV will set sail again around the world to retrace Sir Francis’s record-making endeavour and celebrate the 40th anniversary of the voyage.
The crew will be using traditional navigation techniques during the voyage, and to assist with safe passage the project team felt it was very important to have an accurate and reliable timepiece onboard the yacht. Corum has far exceeded this requirement by very generously donating a substantial amount towards the project. Furthermore, to commemorate the second circumnavigation and the 40th anniversary, Corum have commissioned the design and production of a new and unique 18ct Gipsy Moth IV timepiece. This ‘Limited Edition’ 18ct gold timepiece will be made available through selected retailers around the world later this year and is certain to become a collector’s item. The exclusive timepiece will also come with a certificate that entitles the owner to sail aboard Gipsy Moth IV. A Corum diamond ladies piece will also be auctioned at a Gipsy Moth Gala Dinner in Cowes, held to help raise the much needed funds for the project.
