Gipsy Moth IV at Skandia Cowes Week 2005 - 30 July '05
Sir Francis Chichester’s famous vessel, Gipsy Moth IV, has its sailing debut at Skandia Cowes Week after nearly 40 years in dry-dock. United Kingdom Sailing Academy based in Cowes, which now owns the yacht, is showcasing it at a number of events during the regatta.
With Dame Ellen MacArthur and Giles Chichester, Sir Francis’s son, on board, Gipsy Moth IV will sail into Cowes on Friday 29th July to officially open Skandia Cowes Week. From Saturday 30th July, the public will have their first chance to step aboard Gipsy Moth IV since it left Greenwich - Public viewing will take place between 0830 – 1030 hrs and 1530 – 1800 hrs each day - plus visit the Gipsy Moth IV Exhibition Unit in Cowes Yacht Haven to discover more about the history and future of this unique vessel.
On Sunday 31st July His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will view the yacht at the UK Sailing Academy and meet some of the team who worked on the restoration project. Gipsy Moth IV will also be blessed by Reverend Emblin of St Mary’s Church, Cowes followed by a celebratory party for supporters and sponsors of the project.
Events take a less formal turn on Monday 1st August when the Gipsy Moth IV Team host, what they think will be ‘the party’ of Skandia Cowes Week. Supported by Mount Gay Rum, over 700 people will party the night away. The view from the balcony will be a ‘sea’ of red caps as compulsory head gear is a Mount Gay Red Cap – with a prize for the best customised cap on the night.
Red Funnel Ferries is donating 10p from each return ticket sold during Skandia Cowes Week. A cheque for the money raised will presented to David Green, Global Project Manager at 1500 hrs on Friday 5th August at the Gipsy Moth IV Mobile Exhibition Unit in Cowes Yacht Haven.
All donations go towards the ongoing fundraising to finance Gipsy Moth’s ‘lap of honour’ around the world, taking over 80 young people on an adventure of a lifetime.
