Incident in the Pacific
Sunday 30th April 2006 15.30 hrs
One of our yachts was on passage from Marquesas to Tahiti in company with other yachts when she grounded NE of Tahiti at around 19.30 hrs local time. The visibility was reported as good and the sea state calm. The crew of six had been onboard the vessel since the 14th April. The crew followed correct procedures alerting all relevant authorities. HM Coastguard based at Falmouth was immediately informed and coordinated assistance for the vessel. The crew, who are in good health, were removed from the vessel, Gipsy Moth IV, by local boat and transported to a shore base where they are getting some rest.
The skipper has remained on board the vessel which we anticipate will be towed into deep water during day light hours. The forecast for the next couple of days is good with calm sea conditions. Due to a recent power outage on the boat we have had difficulties in establishing the cause of the event – our first priority has been with the crew and subsequently with the security of the boat – we will gather more information as it becomes available but we are not in a position to say any more at this time.
The UKSA is a registered charity and aboard at the time were the Skipper from the IOW, 1st Mate from Cowes, an adult crew helper from London, a 16 year old from Cowes on the IOW, a young man of 16 and a young lady of 18 from the Manchester area.
